No Time to Go it Alone

Uncertainty and change are ever present realities of life regardless of what the stock market or economic indicators may say. One of my early teachers used to say, “You can tell the aliveness of a person by how predictable they are, the most predictable being a corpus.”

Be alive. Be ready for change at a moment’s notice. Be flexible and ready to take on new challenges. Be a constant learner of new technologies and management skills. Be optimistic and see change, even the loss of your current job, as an opportunity to explore new career options, and even advance in your field with a new company.

During layoffs, companies must reorganize, so this could be your opportunity to advance to a more responsible position. Even when companies are laying off there are still key positions that they are hiring or looking internally for the right talent, maybe that is you! Have you been building your internal relationships upward so higher-level people see the value you bring to the organization and can speak for you?

Do you have a well-defined career strategy for where you want to go and a plan for getting there? If not, this is the time to hire a Career Strategies Coach, like myself, to help you get promoted, or move into a new position and get the knowledgeable support you may need to be successful quickly. If you have been laid-off, then you will profit greatly by having a resume that clearly speaks to the exact position you want and distinguishes you from all those other people with similar experience.

This is no time to go it alone. I can help you reposition yourself for recognition and promotion, or greater visibility and success in your current job, or to create a knock-their-socks-off resume to help you move on successfully to your next position.

There is no time to waste! Call me today for a free consultation and let’s discuss the winning strategy for you. Call 281-293-8864 or email me at joan@bolmer.com

Job Seeking Tips: From One Who Has Been There
(written by a former DBM client)

1. Stay focused on your search. Forget about those projects around the house and all those other distractions.

2. Keep up your efforts even when you have an offer. Right before Hurricane Ike hit, I had an offer from a company. As a result of that, I slowed down my job search efforts (big mistake). It took three weeks for them to get an answer to me. They put a hiring freeze on the department and as a result rescinded my offer. You can imagine my devastation, since I had lost so much time, effort, and momentum in my job search.

3. Network, network, network! I didn't start really networking until the past few months. I was very good at collecting networking contacts but horrible at following up. Recently, I have had quite a bit of success through networking and in fact had another Exploration & Production company showing interest on the same day of my interviews with my new company.

4. Even though your best success rate is through networking, you still have to do the other things as well (recruiters, job fairs, newspapers, and online applications). My current position was obtained through a recruiter via Monster.com. The key is to do all of them at the same time with an emphasis on networking.

5. Be persistent. When I originally applied for one position, I didn't hear back from the recruiter. I followed up a week later and they told me that they wanted a CPA for that position. I told them that I was very surprised that they wouldn't want to at least speak to me since I had the exact experience they were looking for aside from the CPA requirement. The recruiter talked to the HR representative and convinced him to forward my resume on to the decision makers. The decision makers loved my resume and I had an interview the following Monday. They made an offer the very next day. This just goes to show that you have to figure out a way to get past the gate keeper. Be persistent and don't take no for an answer.

6. Re-evaluate your goals to shorten your job search. I realized that I needed to open up my job search in order to increase my chances of success. This strategy really paid off because it got my foot in the door with an E&P company (my main goal) which could open up a lot of opportunities in finance later down the road.

7. If you’re fortunate enough to have a severance package, don't wait until the last minute to step up your efforts.

8. I really think companies are going to step up their hiring efforts in January and February. Make sure you are positioned to take advantage of this. Last, but certainly not least, have faith that God has a plan for you and use this time to strengthen that relationship.
